The first long run of my training schedule was 5 miles. It felt like five miles, which is to say that it felt really really long. At the halfway point I started wondering how, and why, I ever finished training for the first half marathon. It only gets harder. After my run I stretched and panted and just sat down and tried to will myself to stop sweating profusely. Eventually it worked. Based on my dim memories, even though this first long run was hard, last year's first few long runs were much harder. In particular, I still remember the first 6 or 7 mile run being absolutely miserable. I'm also keeping my previous ankle injury in mind and taking care to stretch before and after running. My toes look pretty bad, the bottoms of my feet are full of blisters and callouses from my vibrams. Still, I think they're doing me more good than bad, and as soon as I get a pair of socks to wear with them it will be all good.
